The Revillagigedo Islands, a new heritage of the world

The Revillagigedo Islands archipelago, off the west coast of Mexico in the Pacific Ocean, has recently been honored by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. This is all part of a long process started in 2013 which recognizes the archipelago´s exceptional beauty, with its wealth of land and marine ecosystems, its biological and ecological processes and biodiversity.

According to UNESCO world heritage website, the archipelago is located in the eastern Pacific Ocean and is made up of four remote islands and their surrounding waters: San Benedicto, Socorro, Roca Partida, and Clarión.

The archipelago is part of a submerged mountain range, with the four islands representing the peaks of volcanoes emerging above sea level. The islands provide a critical habitat for a range of wildlife and are of particular importance for seabirds. The surrounding waters have a remarkable abundance of manta rays, whales, dolphins, and sharks.

Mexico has become the first country in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the sixth worldwide, with the highest number of registered goods with a total of 34. In 1994 this region had already been declared by our authorities as a protected fishing zone through defined and official protocols. Now with the UNESCO declaration, our nation has a higher responsibility.

In conclusion, I want to emphasize what Consul Gamaliel Bustillos said when interviewed by “El Canciller Magazine. “A diplomat must know about everything because the work in an Embassy or Consulate involves every single topic related to our domestic and international context” Based on this we must try to include a wide variety of topics when reading.
